Data Science in Soccer - Ventura Analytics Meetup Presentation (April 2024)

In April, I had the pleasure of presenting at the Ventura Analytics Meet-Up, where I explored how data science is revolutionizing the world of soccer (or football, for the global audience). I began by delving into how data is transforming various aspects of the game:

  • Scouting and Recruitment: How clubs are using data to identify and evaluate potential talent.

  • Tactical Analysis: The ways in which teams analyze their own and opponents' play to strategize more effectively.

  • Sports Performance: Insights into how players' physical data is used to optimize training and prevent injuries.

We discussed the three main types of data:

  • Event Data: Details of what happens during the match, such as passes, shots, and tackles.

  • Tracking Data: Positional information of players and the ball throughout the game.

  • Physical Data: Metrics like players' speed, distance covered, and heart rate.

I explained how this data is collected using advanced technology, from wearable sensors to sophisticated cameras and GPS systems.

One of the highlights was demonstrating some compelling visualizations and insights derived from this data using Python. I showcased:

  • How data visualization can unearth patterns and trends that might not be immediately apparent.

  • Analytical techniques that provide deeper insights into player and team performance.

It was an incredible opportunity to introduce the fascinating niche of soccer analytics to a diverse audience of seasoned data professionals and enthusiastic newcomers. For those interested in diving deeper into the subject, my full presentation is available on my GitHub.
